Morgantown
is a small town in south-central Indiana's Morgan County, not far from Indianapolis. As of the 2000 census, the population was 964 residents. Morgantown is nestled in the picturesque countryside about twelve miles north of the town of Nashville, Indiana. Charming and quaint both describe this little town that is full of unique shops and a variety of restaurants. Antique shops and specialty shops offer primitives, quilts, garden décor, candles, dolls, bears and other collectibles, heirlooms and other treasures. Colonel John Vawter moved to Morgantown, Indiana in 1849. He became the founder and first pastor of the Baptist Church, and bore the expense of construction of the brick church, costing about $2,000. Colonel Vawters Day is celebrated in Morgantown every year in the third week of September. Located along Indiana State Road 135, the Morgantown area is also home to large areas of land that were not glaciated during the last ice age. The river valley and contributing watersheds, along with the non-glaciated hills, results in a topography unlike the rest of the metropolitan Indianapolis area. Residents are proud of the scenic terrain, and in recent years have established a county park system and a bike/pedestrian trail system plan to provide protection and access to the amenities. An annual five mile (8 km) run (Run to the Future) is held as a fundraiser for the path system endowment.

Central Indiana has a four-season climate, with cold winters and warm, humid summers. It is classified as humid continental. Temperatures generally diverge somewhat from the north and south by a few degrees. While droughts occasionally occur in the southern region, rainfall totals are usually equally distributed throughout the state. The annual snowfall in Indiana averages less than 22 inches. Indiana is one of the most tornado-prone states in the country. Despite its vulnerability, however, Indiana is not a part of tornado alley.
