Bloomington
is located in Monroe County, which is in the southern region of the state of Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the population was 69,291. Bloomington is home to Indiana University, which was established in 1820. IU has approximately 40,000 students and is the largest campus in Indiana. In 1991, Indiana University was named "one of the five most beautiful campus' in America," in the book, "The Campus As a Work of Art," by Thomas Gaines. Several other schools of higher education are also located in the city. Bloomington has been a "Tree City," for more than 20 years, is rich in history and has a diverse arts culture. Several professional and amateur theater companies are located here, including the Indiana University Department of Theatre & Drama. It's also home to the historic and renovated Buskirk-Chumley Theater, built in 1922. Bloomington has quite an impressive music scene and is host to the Lotus Festival of World Music each fall. Much of Bloomingtons music originates in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, which has for decades been among the nations largest and most highly ranked schools of music. Downtown Bloomington offers unique shops and a variety of cuisine. Colorful murals decorate the downtown buildings, many of them painted by youths at Rhinos Youth Center. Several parks and trails in Bloomington provide outdoor recreational activities for people of all ages.

Central Indiana has a four-season climate, with cold winters and warm, humid summers. It is classified as humid continental. Temperatures generally diverge somewhat from the north and south by a few degrees. While droughts occasionally occur in the southern region, rainfall totals are usually equally distributed throughout the state. The annual snowfall in Indiana averages less than 22 inches. Indiana is one of the most tornado-prone states in the country. Despite its vulnerability, however, Indiana is not a part of tornado alley.
