Indianapolis
is the capital and largest city in the state of Indiana, with an estimated population of 798,382. Its located in the very center of the state. Indianapolis prides itself on its rich cultural heritage and has six official Cultural Districts: Broad Ripple Village, Massachusetts Avenue, Fountain Square, The Wholesale District, Canal and White River State Park and Indiana Avenue. These areas are historically and culturally very important to the city and are major centers for tourism, commerce and residential living. At the center of Indianapolis is Monument Circle, a traffic circle at the intersection of Meridian and Market Streets, featuring the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. There is also a War Memorial Plaza and The War Memorial. In fact, the city of Indianapolis is second only to Washington D.C. for the number of monuments inside the city limits. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a world-class urban bike and pedestrian path that connects the citys five downtown cultural districts and entertainment venues. It will also serve as the hub for the entire central Indiana greenway system, with benches, bike racks, lighting and local art work. Indianapolis is home to several festivals, such as the Indy Jazz Fest, Carmel Arts Festival, Indian Market and Festival and the Indiana State Fair. Every May since 1957, Indianapolis holds the 500 Festival, a month of events including a mini marathon and festival parade, the latter being the day before the Indianapolis 500, for which the city is probably most well know. Also, one of the largest ethnic and cultural heritage festivals is the Summer Celebration, a ten-day national event that highlights the contributions of African-Americans to U.S. society and culture.

Northwest Indiana has a four-season climate typical of most of the Midwest, with a few exceptions due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Cold air passing over the warmer lake water induces precipitation in the lee of Lake Michigan in autumn and winter. As a result of this phenomena, heavy winter precipitation, especially snowfall, can extend eastward from Gary inland to as far as Elkhart. Lake-related snowfall and cloudiness can extend to central Indiana in winter, driven by strong northwesterly winds. In the spring, daily maximum temperatures decrease northward in northern Indiana because of the cooling effect of the Lake. Average daily minimum temperatures in autumn are higher in northwestern Indiana near the warmer lake surface than farther south.
