Fremont
is located in the northeast corner of Indiana, in Steuben County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,696 residents. Settled in 1834 as Willow Prairie, it became the Village of Brockville when it was in 1837. In 1848, it was renamed to honor John C. Fremont, the Great Pathfinder, and also in part because there was already a Brockville in Indiana. There are several places in Fremont on the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Enos Michael House (c. 1850,) the William L. Lords House (c. 1848,) Pokagon State Park (four miles west of Fremont,) and Combination Shelter, also located in the State Park. Each year in July, Fremont is host to a Music Fest, held in the downtown area. The festival features a classic car show, live music, sidewalk sales, a parade, lots of food vendors and a fireworks display. Nearby Pokagon State Park offers swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking, camping and a nature center. A toboggan track is also located at the park and operates from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February. Several other natural lakes abound in the area, including Lake James and Snow Lake, both of which offer swimming, boating and fishing.

The Northeast Corner of Indiana has four distinct seasons. Summers are very warm, accompanied by occasional high humidity and thunderstorms. This can become uncomfortable, but generally doesn't last long and isn't excessive. Winter consists of cold temperatures and lots of snow, especially in the snowbelt area near the Ohio/Michigan border. Spring and fall have mild days and cool nights. Expect more rain in late spring and early summer, including thunderstorms. Fall is usually the sunniest season with plenty of mild days to enjoy the colors of the season. Extreme weather, such as tornadoes, are possible in Indiana, although it is not officially part of tornado alley.
