Sylvan-Lake
is the largest lake in Noble County, northeast Indiana, covering 640 acres and 16 miles of shoreline. It was formed when a dam was constructed across a tributary of the Elkhart rivers as part of a proposed ship canal from Michigan City to Fort Wayne. The town of Rome City lies along the shore of the lake, and has a permanent population of 1,615. The population swells in the summertime when seasonal residents arrive. Many beautiful homes are located on the shores of Sylvan Lake, some of these second homes for part-time residents of Rome City. The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site, also known as Limberlost North, is also located on the shores of Sylvan Lake. This is the second home of the renowned author and is the sister-site to Limberlost, which is located in Geneva, Indiana. Sylvan Lake is less than an hour from Fort Wayne, Goshen and Auburn. Activities in the area include fishing, boating, swimming and hiking. An interesting attraction on Sylvan Lake is an old stone home called "The Castle," which once belonged to legendary actress Carole Lombard. Lombard was from Ft. Wayne and would often go there to visit her mother, who continued to live there. Apparently she would come to Sylvan Lake to get away from the Hollywood limelight. The Castle is located in what was called the "Narrows" which spanned the two basins of the lake. Sylvan Lake is less than an hour's drive from Fort Wayne and Goshen, Indiana.

Sylvan Lake Weather & Climate

Northwest Indiana has a four-season climate typical of most of the Midwest, with a few exceptions due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Cold air passing over the warmer lake water induces precipitation in the lee of Lake Michigan in autumn and winter. As a result of this phenomena, heavy winter precipitation, especially snowfall, can extend eastward from Gary inland to as far as Elkhart. Lake-related snowfall and cloudiness can extend to central Indiana in winter, driven by strong northwesterly winds. In the spring, daily maximum temperatures decrease northward in northern Indiana because of the cooling effect of the Lake. Average daily minimum temperatures in autumn are higher in northwestern Indiana near the warmer lake surface than farther south.
