Cedar-Lake
is located in Lake County, Indiana in the northwest corner of the state. As of the 2000 census, the population was 9,279. The town is most well known for Cedar Lake (the lake, formerly known as Lake of the Red Cedars, Armour.) Cedar Lake was formed by glaciers and is one of the largest inland natural lakes in Indiana, with approximately 794 acres of surface area. The large marsh south of the lake was undoubtedly part of the lake at one time, before the south shore area was drained. The Cedar Lake Marsh is one of the largest contiguous wetlands in the State of Indiana. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Cedar Lake became a popular lakeside resort. Over 50 hotels, several steamboat tour lines and numerous lakeside cottages were located here. Today's Lake of the Red Cedars Museum was originally the Lassen Hotel and is the only surviving structure from Cedar Lake's resort era. Today, the Town complex, located on the corner of Morse Avenue and Constitution Avenue contains 18 acres of parks and open space, including over 6,000 feet of lake shore. The Complex is also home to the annual SummerFest. A boardwalk with comfortable benches are lined along the lakefront and there is plenty of parking and picnic space. Cedar Lake activities include fishing and boating, sailing, hiking and golf. Other attractions in the town include Lemon Lake County Park and Franciscan Friary Grotto.

Cedar Lake Weather & Climate

Northwest Indiana has a four-season climate typical of most of the Midwest, with a few exceptions due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Cold air passing over the warmer lake water induces precipitation in the lee of Lake Michigan in autumn and winter. As a result of this phenomena, heavy winter precipitation, especially snowfall, can extend eastward from Gary inland to as far as Elkhart. Lake-related snowfall and cloudiness can extend to central Indiana in winter, driven by strong northwesterly winds. In the spring, daily maximum temperatures decrease northward in northern Indiana because of the cooling effect of the Lake. Average daily minimum temperatures in autumn are higher in northwestern Indiana near the warmer lake surface than farther south.
