Shipshewana
is located in LaGrange County in northern Indiana near the Michigan border. As of the 2000 census, the population was 536. Shipshewana is situated in the heart of Indiana's Amish Country. It's home to the Menno-Hof Amish & Mennonite Museum, which showcases the history of the Amish and Mennonite peoples. The influence of these gentle people has greatly contributed to Shipshewana's unique atmosphere. The downtown is filled with block after block of stores offering antiques, Amish quilts, gourmet food, collectibles, books, candles, copper goods, Amish crafted furniture, hormone free meats and more. Visitors also love to explore the countryside surrounding Shipshewana, with its rolling hills, Amish farmlands, general stores, antique stores, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Shipshewana is probably most well known for its' large 1,000-vendor flea market. This is the Midwest's largest outdoor flea market - open Tuesday and Wednesday, May through October. The area has many parks for picnicking, hiking and swimming. Shipshewana is also home to several festivals, including the October Fall Crafters Fair and Country Christmas in November when thousands of tiny lights go up all over town. The downtown becomes a winter wonderland with music, food, demonstrations, decorations, games and prizes for people of all ages.

Shipshewana Weather & Climate

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
