Santa-Claus
is located in Spencer County in southwest Indiana. The population is about 2,200 residents. The whole town revolves around a Christmas/Santa Claus theme. Santa Claus was first established in 1854 and called Santa Fe. In 1856, the U.S. postal service refused their application because there was already a Santa Fe, Indiana. According to the curator of the local Santa Claus Museum, the residents of the town waned to keep the "Santa," so they renamed the town Santa Claus. However, that's not a very exciting story, so a tale developed that says "the new-name debate took place on Christmas Eve, and it was interrupted when a door blew open and sleigh bells could be heard on the wind. Its Santa Claus! cried a child, and the town decided this would be the new name." However, there are various myths about how the town got its' name. It does have the world's only post office to bear the name of Santa Claus. Therefore, the post office receives thousands of letters to Santa from all over the world each year. Since 1914, a group of volunteers ensures each child receives a reply from Santa Claus. A majority of Santa Claus residents live within the gated community of Christmas Lake Village, which consists of 2,500 acres developed around three lakes: Christmas Lake, Lake Holly, and Lake Noel. Many residents also live in Holiday Village, a subdivision on the north side of town. Attractions in town include Santas Candy Castle, Holiday World & Splashin Safari, Frostys Fun Center, Christmas Lake Golf Course, and Lake Rudolph Campground.

South-Central Indiana , along the Ohio River, has a four-season, humid continental climate. This region is classified as the Southern Plains and Lowlands of Indiana. This is the hilliest part of the state. Winters are cold, sometimes bitterly so. The transition from cold to hot temps can produce unsettling spring weather with thunderstorms and tornadoes. Oppressive humidity and high temperatures arrive in summer. Autumn is often the most pleasant time of the year with lower humidity than the other seasons, and mostly sunny skies. March is usually the wettest month of the year and September is the driest. Snowfall is much less along the Ohio River than in the northern part of Indiana, near Lake Michigan.
