Ogden-Dunes
is a small town located in Porter County in northwest Indiana near Lake Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,313. Ogden Dunes has a unique history. It was once the home of a world class ski jump. In 1927, the Grand Beach Ski Club, later the Ogden Dunes Ski Club, bought a piece of land on one of the high dunes in the town. They constructed the largest steel ski jump in the world (at the time,) standing 192 feet high. The main tower stood as high as a 22-story building. The first meet was held on January 22, 1928, and for the next four years, meets were held in Ogden Dunes. In 1932, the Norwegian Olympic Team of Birger Rund, Hans Beck, and Kaare Wahlberg (gold, silver, and bronze medalists) came to Ogden Dunes to try the tower. The ski club had financial setbacks during the Great Depression and was finally sold in 1935 to a ski club in Rockford, Illinois. It was moved that summer. Today, Ogden Dunes is strictly a residential community. It's near the Indiana Dunes National Shoreline, which contains 15 miles of beaches, sand dunes, marshes, prairies, rivers and woodland forests. Activities in the park include camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The region also has one of the most diverse plant and bird communities of any park found in the U.S. national park system.

Northwest Indiana has a four-season climate typical of most of the Midwest, with a few exceptions due to its proximity to Lake Michigan. Cold air passing over the warmer lake water induces precipitation in the lee of Lake Michigan in autumn and winter. As a result of this phenomena, heavy winter precipitation, especially snowfall, can amount to as much as 76 inches, compared to 14 inches in the south. Lake-related snowfall and cloudiness can extend to central Indiana in winter, driven by strong northwesterly winds. In the spring, daily maximum temperatures decrease northward in northern Indiana because of the cooling effect of the Lake. Average daily minimum temperatures in autumn are higher in northwestern Indiana near the warmer lake surface than farther south.
