Jeffersonville is located in Clark County along the Ohio River in southeastern Indiana. Locals often refer to the city as simply, "Jeff." It is directly across the Ohio River to the north of Louisville, Kentucky along I-65. As of the 2000 census, the population of Jeffersonville was 30,479. The city has a lot of historical significance. In 1786 Fort Finney was situated where the Kennedy Bridge is today, and a settlement grew around the fort. In 1802 local residents used a grid pattern designed by Thomas Jefferson for the formation of a city, and Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison decided to name the new city after Jefferson. Jeffersonville would be the only city ever designed by Jefferson. The American Civil War increased the importance of Jeffersonville, as it was one of the principal gateways to the South, being directly across from Louisville. It was served by three railroads from the north and had the waterway of the Ohio River. Naturally, this influenced its selection as one of the principal bases for supplies and troops for the Union Army. Today, Jeffersonville has a mix of restaurants and shops along the river front and downtown. The city is scattered with smaller bars, restaurants and fast food chains in areas such as the Quadrangle in which the Town Hall is now located. The city of Jeffersonville is most known for its being the birthplace of the national pizza chain Papa Johns Pizza, and the restaurant chain, Rally's. The second largest clock in the world, the Colgate Clock, is also located here.

Jeffersonville Weather & Climate

Southeastern Indiana has a humid-continental climate of four distinct seasons. Average annual precipitation ranges from 37 inches in northern Indiana to 47 inches in the south. May is the wettest month of the year. Average rainfall decreases slightly as summer progresses. The simultaneous occurrence of high temperatures and high relative humidity is most frequent in the south. Therefore, the heat index is often in the uncomfortable zone during much of Indiana summer. Cloudiness is least in autumn and greatest in winter. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes occur most often in the spring. Snowfall varies greatly north to south, from 14 inches in southeast Indiana to 76 inches in the north-central snowbelt near Lake Michigan.
